I’m happy that I tried another book by this author because it was suspense at its best and even kept me up past my normal bedtime. This is the book that makes me want to go back and start reading her back list (all 38 of them).Mari is an author who is having trouble writing. A little bit of vodka seems to help her through the day and wasting time reading email helps the time go past. Until she reads an email from her number one fan. She replies to the email – her first big mistake. Soon after, she gets notification that a Hollywood producer wants her to come to dinner to discuss making one of her books into a screenplay. She isn’t really sure that its legit but decides that dinner will be nice, the man’s wife will be there and she can always leave if she’s not comfortable. These were all her assumptions and the truth ended up totally different. She ended up drugged and woke up tied to a bed in a dusty old basement with her number one fan keeping her captive. He wants to play out all of the scary parts of her previous books and always seems a step ahead of her. Does she have the strength – both mental and physical to escape from her cruel captor?I can’t reveal anything else about the story because I don’t want to spoil it — but I will tell you that this story is a roller coaster ride that will keep you turning the pages as you speed towards the end. This fast paced book is full of twists and turns that will keep you biting your nails until the end.

This is the first book I have read by this author. I enjoyed the book, but kept feeling like something was missing. I’m not sure what though. The story had a good villain and storyline. Maybe it was because it reminded me so much of the movie Misery. I think you will enjoy the book. It is well written and a fast-moving book.

When mari, an author, receives an email to meet a producer. She can’t believe it’s true but ultimately goes to meet him. However he isn’t who he says he is. Drugging her and leaving her locked in a room. Saying he is helping her get better after the loss of her family. With torture as the main form of getting mari back into writing can she survive and escape him. With a few twists and turns on this story I enjoyed this quick psychology thriller story. It’s a nice quick read as a palate cleanser for romcoms and fantasy books.

DO NOT OPEN may be a nod to MISERY, but Kiersten Modglin made this story wholly her own.Mari Montgomery doesn’t have a lot left to live for. Once a successful writer, the words just won’t come to her anymore. She’s lost her husband and son in a vaguely referenced accident, and she tends to find solace at the bottom of a bottle instead of creating stories at her desk. When she receives an e-mail one day from a fan praising her work, she’s shocked to see that the sender owns a production company. Needing this opportunity more than she’d like to admit, she lets her best friend silence that little voice that cautions, “ð©ð ððððððð.”It isn’t long before Mari realizes she’s made a terrible mistake, and she finds herself trapped with a monster in human form. Be aware that some of the scenes, while I wouldn’t call graphic, are much darker than what appear in her previous books. However, they are absolutely integral to the storyline and weren’t at all disturbing to me.When I tell you that the tension I felt throughout this book was palpable, I mean that I was barely breathing. It was as if when Mari was hiding, I was right there alongside her. As a long-time reader of this author’s books, I thought I was used to her twists, but this one absolutely blindsided me, and I sat there dumbly with my mouth open. She was far from finished, and before I recovered from that one, she hit me with one that left me absolutely silent, eyes filled with tears. Yes, I know I sound hyperbolic, but it was that intense.This book was so much more than a thriller. It was about confronting fears, accepting loss, and moving on even when all you want to do is give up. It is also a haunting tale of how social media has given us so much access to people we admire, and that is often a double-edged sword.
